I still won't be calling you

If you know me or read my blog often, you know that I am a bit of a geek, but not stereotypically so.  Examples abound in previous blog posts so I’ll just add that I don’t have a single game installed on my laptop, I’ve never owned a comic book, and I think this video is the best thing to have come from the Lord of the Rings books.

But I do love gadgets.  I had a cell phone about twelve years ago, which was ridiculous then since I knew precisely five people that didn’t live in my house and didn’t even like speaking to many of them in person, let alone on the cursed telephone.  But the salesman was persuasive and I was young(er) and stupid(er) then,  and the phone was cool and it made chirping sounds whenever I called myself to be sure it was still working, so I bought it.

Twelve years later I still hate talking on the phone, but Apple’s iPhone, with its sexy, clean interface and huge-handed models, has been on my wishlist since last summer.  Several of my co-workers have been updating their company phones to expensive Blackberries, so when the iPhone 3G was released last month I gathered up my courage, ignored my IT manager’s concerns, and bought my company’s first iPhone.

It is freaking awesome.  In addition to the iPod, email, and Safari web browser, there are some brilliant games and applications available for the iPhone.  Crash Bandicoot is a favorite of mine, and my boys can’t get enough virtual light saber.  (It’s a pretty great phone, too—I’ve had it four days and both calls I’ve had to make sounded perfect.)

Lindsay wanted an iPhone desperately, too. We talked her down to a cheaper model, I am happy to say. I continue to be astounded when we walk by the apple store in the mall (which is often right now--nothing else to do while we bide our time here!) to see the lines just waiting to get in to get the phone. The first week it was wrapped around itself many times and all the way down the hallway. Ridiculous! But, hey, I'm glad you like your phone!

I didn't have to wait in any lines to get mine, I just stopped in the AT&T store twice while we were in the city for other things. (It would have been worth waiting in line, though. Sexiest little gadget in the world!)

I'm sorry Lindsay didn't get her iPhone. Parents just don't understand...

Great phone, isn't it? I got mine for my birthday last year and will never own another phone (unless its the 3G). The battery life is ridiculously short, but it may be because I am on it constantly doing anything I would ever need to do. Congrats and welcome.

It really is hard to put down. I'm writing this from it even now... Almost makes me want a MacBook pro instead of the Dell we're looking at, but dag, yo, that's an overpriced laptop!

+1 for Mac!

Their products are a brilliant marriage of form and function.

I am considering migrating over to AT&T from Verizon just for the iPhone. I have absolutely been impressed with my 5th gen iPod (I've had it 3 years and counting, and still get great battery life out of it), with Melissa's Nano, and our iMac.

If money grew with the turnips in the back yard, I'd own a Macbook Air, a Macbook Pro, an iPhone. I'd probably also get a tattoo like the nerd William H Macy plays in Wild Hogs. So it's probably a good thing my turnips aren't money turnips, just the boring old slightly-hot-because-they-don't-get-watered-enough kind.

Glad you are liking the new gadget!

Here's a dirty secret, Jay. If we bought a Macbook, I'd run Windows XP on it. Sacrilege, I know. I'll just stick with Dell so I don't upset the Apple gods.

I run a dual boot and love it :) It's sort of like having my cake and eating it too.

I use Bootcamp, an app which is very clean and easy. Some folks swear by VMWare, I'll stick with the Boot
