Music I like in spite of myself

(As I wrote earlier, I think the book Schott’s Original Miscellany is a great idea – random knowledge compiled in list form is surprisingly fun to read.  I thought it’d be fun to add a category of blog entries filed under “miscellany” that would take  a similar format as the book, though more wordy and stuff about me, because it is, after all, my blog.)

It is true that I am known for my musical snobbery, but every now and again I am forced to suspend my hatred for popular music and admit that a certain band or song is worthwhile.  In this first-ever miscellany post, here’s a short list of music I really like even though I heard it first on the radio:

“Everything” by Michael Bublé
I know I’m only supposed to tolerate popular music, but I absolutely love this song.  If Wendy and I were to get married again, this would be the wedding video soundtrack for sure.  Maybe we even play this on the kitchen stereo and dance around the room together, pretending we can croon as well as Bublé. Maybe.

Albert Hammond, Jr.
I heard the song “Everyone Gets a Star” on the radio during my grueling half-mile commute last year and had to Google the lyrics to find out who it was.  Very catchy.

Ben Folds
With or without the “Five,” I dig Ben Folds.  You probably heard Brick on the radio along with the rest of the world, but in my estimation their best song (and one of the greatest songs ever) is The Ascent of Stan.

Panic! At the Disco
So what if their style is largely trendy emo?  Clever, catchy, and fun

Keane
Keane is what happens when you use a piano instead of a guitar in rock music.  It’s beautiful

Everyone Gets a Star is on my top pop songs list. The lyrics seem pretty dumb and senseless, but it's oh so catchy.

Oh, and Keane should really stick to audible entertainment. Visually, they leave more than a little something to be wanted. And that's stated as kindly as I can.

I almost mentioned that when I saw that video (for the first time, yesterday) it made me like Keane a little less. That squidgy guy doesn't seem to match what I imagined he would look like.

In the Somewhere Only We Know video (the radio-play song that introduced me to Keane) I think they actually resemble Muppets. Particularly the piano guy.

This is a great idea; not at all what I thought the content would be from the title, but still...

"Everything" is one of those songs you hear for the first time and you know you've heard it for at least 80 years! Love that deja vu feeling, especially when it's pleasant to hear again! This reminds me a bit of Norah Jones with the brand-new-classic-music style.

The rest are also nails-on-the-head for me. My down-side to these songs are that, quite frequently, I look further into their reportoire and am repulsed. (not in these specific examples, but generally...)

Music *I* like in spite of myself is generally the stuff one shouldn't listen to in presence of one's children i.e. the heavy, often profane or obscene, but oh so energizing other side of Keane--where the guitar's distortion is so strong it is almost an instrument in its own right...
I guess Heavy Metal is my secret pleasure, my 'Pepsi' for the more average mormon.

I wanted to add more, but now all I can think translates poorly from guitar-riff to keyboard. Where's my Megadeth?!? I gotta go... ;)

Ok, so Keane... the piano guy... I have no idea how he can bounce around like that and still play the right notes! And in the music video for Somewhere Only We Know the lead singer's dancing reminds me of how Jay dances sometimes. Hehe. Hopefully he doesn't read that! Love ya, Jay!

Fun stuff to listen to, Paul! Thanks for sharing.
